The TYRForce by name along with the wings logo seem to be communicating that they are THE GOAT (Greatest of All Time) of weightlifting shoes. Taking symbolism from the iconic Air Force 1s.
Nike Air Force 1s are one of the most iconic sneakers ever produced. Released in 1982, they were the first basketball shoes to feature Nike’s Air technology, providing extra cushioning and support. Over the years, Air Force 1s have transitioned from athletic footwear to a staple in streetwear and fashion, thanks to their classic design and versatility.
But do the TYRForce deserve to be named after such an innovative iconic shoe?
Although the TYRForce are named after the Air Force 1s, the shoes are actually modeled after what many would consider to be the true GOAT of weightlifting shoes.. the 08 Adistars.
The 08 Adistars are the most culturally impactful and innovative shoes in weightlifting history. If a shoe were to be compared to the Nike Airforce 1s, these would be it.
They each hold a significant place in their respective communities, influencing trends and setting standards.
Both shoes are praised for their innovative designs that meet specific needs—performance enhancement for Adistar 08s and versatile style for Air Force 1s.
Their enduring popularity and influence over the years have cemented their place as cultural mainstays.
How do the TYRForce fit into this picture?
According to TYR, the key features that the TYRForce have to offer are a Carbon Fiber Power Plate, Electro-Plated Stability Wrap (???), Anatomical (Wide) Toe, TYRTAC Outsole, Ventilated Upper, Double Straps, and lastly a 1″ effective heel height.
Now.. out of these, which of them are truly innovative?
To start I want to preface that I don’t think TYR was shying away from the fact that their shoes are their own rendition of the 08 Adistars. The Carbon Fiber Power Plate is straight from the 08 Adistar’s Torsion System in terms of style and concept. The difference would likely be in the flexibility of the plate. I imagine the TYRForce are stiffer than the 08 Adistars.
The ventilated Upper while executed differently is also a feature of the 08’s. The ClimaCool System was a ventilated upper tongue that also provided extra grip to secure your feet while you lift.
The Electro-Plated Stability wrap is really hard to identify just from their website. I imagine it’s the outer of the shoe and while it has a fancy name, I can’t imagine it being ground breakingly innovative or even noticeable in terms of wear.
Other features like the wide toe box, double straps and the 1″ effective heel height have all been done before. Nike Romaleos have two straps and a wide toe box, and Adidas Leistung II’s have a 1″ effective heel height.
As a vintage shoe collector who has owned 3 pairs of 08 Adistars at this point. I feel like even as a rendition of the 08 Adistars, the design itself falls flat. The secret to the branding on the 08’s is subtly. The three stripes that represent the iconic adidas brand are built into the shoe through the use of the strap with one logo on the back and on the toes of the outsole. Whereas the TYRForce have the TYR logo and TYR wings plastered onto both sides of the shoe, another TYR logo on the outsole and tongue, and in the worst case yet another logo (Squat University) on the back. That was most certainly… a choice.
In summary, these shoes are meant to pay homage to not just one but two iconic shoes. That is a lot of weight to put on ones soles and unfortunately I think I have to give TYR.. three red lights but the jury may overturn the decision.
